Back to the castle

It was time for another trip down to Ardtornish Castle today – the light was different and I was looking for a different photographic approach.  Once again I was in awe of the structure, not because of it’s design or placement, but thinking about the people who lived here and made it their headquarters. Who were these people?  It seems that in the 14th century castles were the way to go if you wished to construct a fortress to protect your lands and keep watch.  Once again I marveled at how this castle sits on the Sound of Mull with a commanding view.  We forget that these people were sea people and the approaches to all of these castles is from the water.  I tried to capture the  iconic look of Ardtornish and so wandered down the path along the side of the ruin.  Looking up from this angle it is easy to see the strength of this mighty fortress. What must it have been like to live within its walls? There were some great cloud formations as well and some silhouette shots of the trees that could easily bring you back to a winter’s day in the middle ages. Who’s to say it didn’t look like this??
