Fly me to the Beach!

I was ushered into my afternoon exploration by periods of sunshine and finally, no rain.  After checking the airport website I saw that a plane was due to land in about 20 minutes so headed in that direction – airport is very close to where I am staying. A narrow, single track road winds through the hills until before you is a very expansive beach – the Barra Airport! This is the only commercial beach landing in the world and flight times are dictated by the tides! It was interesting to see the plane come in over the beach and land easily on the wet sand. I counted about 15 people deplaning – and only 4 boarded for the return flight to Glasgow.

Further up the road was a school house set in the middle of a huge field in which there were several cattle grazing high up on the hill.  Not far from the school was a rocky coastline which was beautiful to look at as the sun peered through the clouds on its way to the horizon. It was there that I met a cow, grazing all by herself. I’m not sure why she wasn’t with the other cattle who could be seen quite a distance away. My presence didn’t bother her in the least! I seem to see more cows here on Barra than sheep and there are cattle crossings on every road. As with many other places I have visited in Scotland, the livestock roam freely and it is not unusual to find sheep in the road.  The sunset disappeared as clouds once again obscured the sky – I am bound and determined to get a nice sunset photo before I leave but so far mother nature has not cooperated.
