The trip is drawing to a close and I overnighted in Lochmaddy to be near the ferry. This is a ferry port on the island of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It sits in the shadow of picturesque mountains with a view to the sea. The town’s main attraction is Taigh Chearsabhagh, a community arts centre and museum with a shop and café. Unfortunately, these were not open when I went to catch the ferry to Uig. As always seems to be the case, I uncovered more information on my last day on Uist and needed another 2-3 days to follow-up! I just might have to return in the fall for a longer stay. Borve Castle, on the island of Benbecula, is a site I have neglected. It is believed to have been built by Amie MacRurai, wife of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles, and dated between 1344 and 1363. This is the same Amie MacRurai we spoke of in relation to Castle Tioram. Amie was a direct descendant of Somerled, through her great-grandfather Ruaidhri mac Raghnaill, the founder of the MacRuari clan.
Borve Castle was occupied by the Macdonalds of Benbecula until the early 17th century.
