The Fairy Glen

Today was a travel day over to the Outer Hebrides – Uist to be exact.  Before I boarded the ferry I took a wee detour to see The Fairy Glen, a magical place with enchanting geographical formations formed over 100,000 years ago by post glaciar landslides. Subsequent centuries of erosion and the elements sculpted the Torridonian sandstone into unusual patterns of cone-shaped hills and random boulders and even a basalt “castle.” The walk through this fairy-like landscape is intriguing as you try and understand the natural forces that fashioned these cone-shaped little hills.  Today the area is a working farm and sheep can be seen happily munching their way across this grass and boulder landscape.  The natural basalt outcrop, known as Castle Ewen,  is an amazing rock formation that gives the appearance of a ruined medieval fortress.

Once on the ferry the trip was under 2 hours and thankfully I made it to my cottage before it turned dark.  The cottage is an old blackhouse, many of which are seen here on Uist.  It is yet another very charming accommodation and just perfect for a solo traveler or a couple.
